Note that while the movie has a lovely (and irreverent, think rotary carphones) steampunk aesthetic, and while one of the characters is an inventor, the novels in A Series of Unfortunate Events are not really steampunky. It has a definite ‘out of time’ feel to it, but not a lot of the elements that I associate with steampunk. It’s not futuristic or science fictiony in any way. And rather than having, say, steam technology, most modern technology exists in its reality, up to and including computers, just in a more absurd and unrealistic way. It’s still a great series and may have some of the things you are looking for in it, though.
