Currently Reading and Goals

So I have some goals in addition to reading 40 books this year that I’d like to share with you.

1. Read no more than one nonfiction, one fiction, and one graphic novel at a time.
2. Inspired by Colleen’s excellent post and this year’s YALSA YA Lit Symposium theme, I’m going to think more, read more, and write more about diversity in publishing.

I’m sure I’ll find more as I move through the year.

Currently Reading:
Nonfiction – Time Management from the Inside Out by Julie Morganstern
Fiction – The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

I’m not currently reading a graphic novel but I’m planning to pick up the Angel: After the Fall compilations (they’re hardcover!) from the shelf today.  The shelf in my house.  The comic book shelf.  (It is supplemented by the comic book box.  And then of course, there’s Will’s hundreds and hundres of issues in the attic.)

Next Up:
Nonfiction – The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin or Odd Girl Out by Rachel Simmons
Fiction – Dragon’s Keep by Janet Lee Carey or Dreams of the Dead by Thomas Randall

Which of these I read next will just depend on my mood, but it’s always nice to have a plan.

  1. Hi! I found your blog through the Comment Challenge. I just finished reading the Happiness Project. I loved it! Hope you enjoy it too. Gretchen Rubin is funny and inspiring. Happy reading!

  2. Hi! Thanks for dropping by. I’m looking forward to The Happiness Project. I’ve been reading Gretchen’s blog for a while and I always like to know what she has to say, even when I disagree with her.

I always think it’s pretty cool when bloggers use LJ – I’ve been a diehard for years. I also think your “no more than one” rule is a good one to adopt myself. I got in the habit of agreeing to blurb for publishers and have ended up with five all due around the same time – yuck! Good luck with your 2010 readings & writings!

  4. reading

Hi! Thanks so much for visiting my blog yesterday. I thought I’d return the “hello.” I wrote down some of the things from your book list to put on mine for the new year. (Especially interested in that Geeks book by Jon Katz!) I’m with you on The Book Thief. And I SHOULD be reading books on time management. Hope it helps! I don’t read a lot of graphic novels but there’s one coming out soon about the Carter Family that I’m really excited about. (

Thanks for coming by! I’ve stopped taking on any commitments of that nature, even accepting review copies, because the pressure is just too much right now. I love LJ!

  6. Re: reading

Hi and welcome! The Jon Katz book is one I had really intended to review – it has a lot of 90s rhetoric about the miraculous powers of the internet which now is both funny and a bit sad. I think graphic novels are an excellent way to read about history. I did a booklist focused partially on that:

  7. Reading Goals

I read Time Management From the Inside Out – I liked her one on organizing stuff even better, but both are good!
Are you going to the YALSA Symposium? It looks like it will have wonderful programs. You are smart to get started reading more diverse literature – a fabulous goal!

  8. Re: Reading Goals

I like the Organizing one, too. I’m to the point now where I’ve read both and am ready to actually start working with them.

I’ve applied for a YALSA Symposium Stipend but if I don’t get it, I probably won’t go, because of the travel expense – a flight from NC to NM isn’t cheap!
